The Whitechapel murders
Yesterday I went on a walking tour with London Walks entitled The “Jack the Ripper” Haunts walk. Contrary to what it says on the site, Donald, the resident Ripper expert, was not on hand, but our tour was led by a very knowledgeable and enthused Blue Badge guide called Molly. We took in not so much Whitechapel, where the murders took place, but more my neck of the woods, not far from Liverpool Street, which may or may not have been a clever decision: the tour I took highlighted the difference between the desperate circumstances of the East End at the time of the murders and the far more polished scenes now, but I’m still curious to see the actual sites we didn’t take in. It was a diverting introduction to the subject, but no more than a taster. So, she asked, looking at no regular readers in particular, could anyone recommend a book or two on the subject?
