About Basil
Basil Exposition began on April Fool’s Day of 2008. I can’t recall whether this was intentional.
My name is Fionnuala and I am a student of English literature in Dublin, but I am spending my summer in London.
This blog has no fixed remit, other than to cover what interests me, be it music, books, film, craft or any other number of things you might care to mention. I also continually try to cover events that are happening where I am, in Dublin or London (or elsewhere, though that’s rare).

I was dismayed to learn from a reliable source only the day after my first post the truth behind my blog’s name. I chose this name as a result of what I believed was a long-standing joke of film critic Mark Kermode. This name, Basil Exposition, is for the character in a film who has to substantially explain the plot in an unrealistic way to further the action. This is the first phrase that popped into my head when WordPress was demanding a title. I am not, as you can tell, very good at names. The reliable source informed that this was not a Kermodean joke but an actual character from the Austin Powers films; Kermode had simply re-appropriated the joke. You live and learn.
Kermode can be heard every Friday afternoon on BBC Radio Five Live on Simon Mayo’s show. It is also available as a podcast. I highly recommend it, even if it now appears some of his jokes are purloined.
